Summer 2025 Exhibitions Tour
This event is free with museum admission.Join us for a guided walking tour of the exhibitions Edward Burtynsky: The Great Acceleration and Sheida Soleimani: Panjereh, led by a museum educator.About the ExhibitionsEdward Burtynsky: The Great Acceleration The first solo institutional exhibition of world-renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky’s work in New York City in over twenty years, The Great Acceleration reveals the depth of Burtynsky's investigation into the human alteration of natural landscapes around the world, revealing both their present fragility and enduring beauty. This retrospective features over seventy photographs—including many of Burtynsky’s landmark images, some never before exhibited—alongside three ultra high-resolution murals and a visual and narrative timeline of his creative life. The Great Acceleration serves as both an urgent call for environmental awareness and an invitation to appreciate the sublimity that persists in the landscape, deepening our understanding of the global challenges we face today.Sheida Soleimani: Panjereh In Panjereh, Soleimani uses her family’s history—specifically her parents' flight from Iran as political refugees following the 1979 revolution—as a framework for exploring how meaning and memory are shaped by migration.Known for her studio-based constructions that layer photographs, props, live animals, and her parents into magical realist tableaus, Soleimani expands this approach in Panjereh while also debuting a new body of work: a series of close-up analogue photographs of injured birds. These works draw from her practice as a federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator and founder of Congress of the Birds, a care tradition she inherited from her mother. In these new images, Soleimani draws attention to the plight of migratory birds, many of whom are wounded on their journeys through populated areas, using them as metaphors for the social, political, and environmental barriers faced by displaced people around the world. The exhibition also includes a new site-specific wall drawing created especially for ICP’s galleries. Program Format/Accessibility InformationThis is a walking tour of the gallery; no seating is provided. For accessibility questions or requests, please email [email protected]. Her work has been commissioned by The New Yorker, Vogue, Document Journal, The New York Times and other publications. She has been teaching at ICP since 2009. About Project Fashion Shoot CourseGood fashion photography involves the merger of portraiture, style, and mise-en-scène with the proper utilization of light. Students in this course study portraiture and light as they experiment with concept and style. A designer provides the wardrobe, and we work as a team to develop the art direction, lighting design, styling, sets, and other key elements of production. The class also includes lectures on historical and contemporary topics in fashion photography and an introduction to narrative themes, as well as student critiques and collaborative exercises. This course is limited to 12 students. This course is offered on-site, July 19-27, 2025 and meets weekly on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM ET About Jayne WexlerJayne Wexler is a New York-based portrait photographer who has a way of quickly earning people’s trust—creating moments that go beyond the photo—whether she meets them on set, in the street, or in far-flung places. Her portraits are known for their emotionaldepth, sense of warmth and playfulness, and genuine essence.Alongside her work with editorial and advertising clients, Jayne also teaches and guest speaks—sharing her approach to photography, grounded in openness, connection, and storytelling. She’s published three books of portraiture—Daughters & Mothers (a New York Times bestseller), Girlfriends, and Grandmothers—and spends her off-hours creating portraits, shooting street photography, and contributing her work to nonprofit causes.Jayne lives between New York City and the Hudson Valley with her husband, Hunter, their son, Justice, and dog, Lancelot. About Urban Photography - Finding Your Point of View Course Capturing the essence of a neighborhood reveals its true personality. This class consists of shooting in various neighborhoods –NoLita, Chinatown, the Lower East Side and Bushwick. The course guides students in making images that focus on the people, architecture and subtle details of each area. Students seek out aspects that pique their interest –from the structure of the buildings to the people– creating their own visual record of the neighborhoods. Lessons on framing, depth of field, lighting and composition happen on location, offering students the essential elements to create dynamic photographs. This course is limited to 12 students.
