Giorgia Fiorio

Italian, July 23rd 1967 – Turin, independent artist-photographer. Founder in 2002 and artistic director till 2013 of the Reflexions Masterclass international seminar of contemporary photography; in 2009 Giorgia Fiorio’s book and exhibition The Gift were granted the UNESCO Patronage. Starting from social-documentary tradition, the vision of GF develops a twenty-three year research around the human figure: from 1990 to 1999 – the first long term project MEN unfolds as a wide social research “on male closed communities in the Western society”. From 2000 to 2009 THE GIFT articulate a ten-year project over thirty-eight countries in the five continents, around “the relation between the individual and the Sacred”. In the past few years, transcending the photographic dimension of mimesis, GF's enquiry widens toward the fleeting condition between reality and appearance. In 2010 the conception of the project HUMANUM takes shape, presently in progress with the collaboration of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the Robotics of the Perception Laboratory of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa. The project reconsiders the earliest representations of the human figure in the archaic human statuary in the perception of our time questioning visual conscience in the experience of invisible and transfiguration. Having finalised a first series in Greece at The National Archaeological Museum of Athens and at the Acropolis Museum, the Humanum project has just finalised 20th century BC piece at Musée du Louvre Egyptian Antiquities Department in Paris. GF books have been published in: France by Editions Actes Sud; Italy by Peliti Associati, Edizioni Contrasto and Motta Editore; Germany by Braus Edition; Greece by Apeiron Photo; USA by Aperture. Her works have been collaterally extensively published in magazines of 15 different countries all over the world.
