Ayumi Tanaka is a Japanese-born visual artist based in New York. Using found photographs, self-portraits, and household objects, she creates photomontages and three-dimensional dioramas composed of overlapping layers of photographic collage, which are then assembled and rephotographed to depict psychological landscapes.

Tanaka’s work has been exhibited at venues including the Brooklyn Museum, The Noguchi Museum in New York, and the Center for Photography at Woodstock. Her work has been reviewed or featured in publications including *The New York Times*, *The Guardian*, and *I’m So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now*, published by Aperture.

She earned her BFA from Osaka University of Arts in Japan and studied at the International Center of Photography in New York in 2010. She is the recipient of PDN’s 30 New and Emerging Photographers to Watch, the International Center of Photography Director’s Fellowship, and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship.

Tanaka’s works have been acquired by the Brooklyn Museum and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. She is represented by The Third Gallery Aya in Osaka, Japan.
