Abigail Montes
Abigail Montes is a documentary photographer, educator and youth arts coordinator from the South Bronx. Since 2013, she has worked with various initiatives empowering youth through photography. She graduated from LaGuardia Community College in 2002 with an AAS in Commercial Photography. In 2016, Montes joined the International Center of Photography (ICP) as a Teaching Assistant. In 2018 she graduated from the Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism One-Year Certificate Program at ICP and was awarded the Documentary Arts Fellowship. In 2019 Montes became the Co-Coordinator and Lab Manager of ICP at THE POINT CDC, a youth photo program based just a few blocks from where she grew up and centers her documentary practice. In 2021 she earned a BFA in Photography from Saint John’s University. In addition to her role sitting on the board of the photo collective Faces of Harlem, Montes is currently a lead instructor for ICP at THE POINT and ICP's Teen Academy, teaching the fundamentals of photography in the virtual classroom with social justice, self-esteem, community and collaboration as thematic anchors.
