2011 Infinity Award: Writing
Gerry Badger is a photographer, architect, and photographic critic living in London. He has written extensively for the photographic press, and has curated a number of exhibitions, including The Photographer as Printmaker (1980) for the Arts Council of Great Britain, and Through the Looking Glass: Postwar British Photography (1989) for the Barbican Arts Centre, London. Among his books are Collecting Photography (2002), The Genius of Photography (2007), and (with Martin Parr) The Photobook: A History (two volumes, 2004 and 2006), winner of the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis and the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation Book Award in 2007. Badger has written introductory essays to many photographic monographs, including those of such photographers as Stephen Shore, Anthony Hernandez, Paolo Pellegrin, Guido Guidi, and Mark Power. Recently, he has been writing essays for reprints of classic photobooks, including Chris Killip's In Flagrante (2008), Martin Parr's The Last Resort(2009), Victor Palla and Costa Martins' Lisboa: Cidade Triste e Alegre(2009), Yutaka Takanashi's Towards the City (2009), and John Gossage'sThe Pond (2010). His latest introductory essay is for The Protest Box, a 2011 reissue of five classic protest photobooks. Badger's own photography is in a number of public and private collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, The Portland Art Museum (Portland, Oregon), The Victoria and Albert Museum (London), The Arts Council Collection (London), and The Bibliothèque Nationale (Paris).
