Virginia G. Ruiz
Virginia García Ruiz is a Brooklyn-based visual artist from southern Spain, where she studied Biology before moving to Germany. She moved to New York City in 2023 to further her education and completed the Media Studies program at The Schools of Public Engagement. During her studies, she found her way back to the life sciences through an internship at the American Museum of Natural History, which greatly inspired her practice. Her role involved assisting with butterfly collections and macro photography.
She works with black-and-white photography and alternative processes. By handcrafting cyanotype emulsions on glass, she shapes material and chemical properties into creative tools. Her approach to printmaking is rooted in material research. The substrate is just as important as the image, defining the limits of where a print can go. She recently developed a process she calls Vitrovelotype, in which emulsion veils are selectively lifted and repositioned on glass. She then reuses these plates as negatives to create silver gelatin prints.
Her work reflects her fascination with birds and ecology. This journey began with a fieldwork class during her studies, where she visited park hotspots to document bird species and their behaviors, as well as their role in native plant ecosystems.
