Join us at ICP for a conversation between Jade Doskow, Mark Lubell, and David Campany on the occasion of our latest exhibition, Photobooks USA: 2000-25, discussing the impactful photobook Here is New York: A Democracy of Photographs, which showcases the crowd-sourced photography exhibition that went up just days after the attack. Doskow will speak about the nature of photographing Freshkills Park post 9/11, with Campany and Lubell reflecting on the book’s life and legacy since its publication in 2002. About the BooksHere is New York contains nearly a thousand of the more than five thousand pictures that some three thousand photographers submitted for an ongoing exhibition organized about a week after 9/11. The magnitude and portent of this archive is best conveyed in the following expression: the one picture which will probably come to stand for the World Trade Center catastrophe will be ALL of these pictures. Speaking both to the horror of what happened and to the way it is encountered, this book of color and B&W images produces an irreducible sign of profound recognition. About the SpeakersJade Doskow (b. 1978, Pennsylvania, United States) lives and works in Red Hook, Brooklyn. She received a BA in the Philosophy of Art & Music from New York Unviersity’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and an MFA in Photography & Related Media from the School of Visual Arts. In exploring limbo-spaces within urban sites, Doskow’s recurring themes address rewilding and sustainability, architectural repurposing, the urban built environment and public spaces, and all frequently with a focus on New York City-specific environs. Her best-known long-term projects include Freshkills, Lost Utopias, and Red Hook. Doskow’s work is informed by a multitude of sources including literature, music, and local history, often using the photographic medium to question the accuracy of historical record and contemporary realities. Doskow’s work has been exhibited globally, including recently the Staten Island Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Museum London, Asheville Museum of Art, Tracey Morgan Gallery, All Street Gallery, Cornell University, and many others. She is the subject of the 2021 documentary Jade Doskow: Photographer of Lost Utopias. Her work has been reviewed and featured in publications including the New York Times, Hyperallergic, the Virginia Quarterly Review, Aperture, Photograph, Architect, Wired, and Newsweek Japan. Doskow is a contributing environmental photojournalist for the New York Times, a member of the ABC No Rio photography collective, and faculty at the School of Visual Arts, CUNY College of Staten Island, and the International Center of Photography. Doskow is the Photographer-in-Residence of Freshkills Park, New York City. David Campany is Creative Director of the International Center of Photography, New York. He has worked worldwide with institutions including MoMA New York, Tate, Whitechapel Gallery London, Centre Pompidou, Le Bal Paris, ICP New York, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, The Photographer’s Gallery London, ParisPhoto, PhotoLondon, The National Portrait Gallery London, Aperture, Steidl, MIT Press, Thames & Hudson, MACK and Frieze.

Since emerging from NYC’s East Village drag scene in the late 1980s, Linda Simpson has been a multi-faceted drag queen as a nightlife promoter, journalist, playwright, actress, game-show hostess and publisher of the underground gay magazine My Comrade. He holds academic positions at C-RRED, The New School University, and Union Theological Seminary in NYC. Roberson is deeply involved in the House Ball Community, having founded four major houses and co-founded The Ballroom Freedom School. He co-conceptualized the House Lives Matters National Leadership Initiative and edits the “Arts Everywhere/Ballroom Freedom School” publication. His influence extends to mainstream media, having worked as a cultural consultant for the FX series Pose. Roberson’s work focuses on uplifting Black/Latinx LGBTQ+ individuals through various platforms and initiatives.Leggoh JohVera is a legendary voguer, commentator, event producer, and longtime force within the ballroom community. As the Founder and CEO of Open To All Entertainment, he has created platforms that celebrate talent, culture, and community while collaborating on major moments with artists including Beyoncé and Madonna. Known for his commanding presence, quick wit, and unmistakable energy, Leggoh brings both experience and personality to the stage as tonight’s Master of Ceremonies.Michael Cox, known by the stage name MikeQ, is an American DJ, musician, music producer, and prominent figure in the ballroom community. He is the founder of the record label Qween Beat, and has released music with Fade To Mind, Qween Beat, Mad Decent and Night Slugs. . In 2017 he co-founded the "House of Vogue" party in New York City.[11] In 2020 MikeQ was the featured resident DJ for HBO's Legendary.
