Bringing together more than 50 photobooks, Photobooks USA 2000–25 examines how artists have used the medium to tell stories and circulate their work in new ways.
One of the exhibition's co-curators, ICP Curatorial Assistant malaika newsome talks us through the show and the significance of the photobook as an artistic medium
The exhibition showcases a range of photobooks and photographers coming out of the United States of America, across cultures and histories. As well as different approaches to photo book making, artifacts, writings, forms, and styles.
newsome told ICP: “We really wanted to challenge the concept of what a photo book looks like in different forms and designs. And we feel like Jeff Wall was a good representation of challenging the concept of a photobook physically.”
The exhibition features an installation of Wall’s works which is meant to interact with the museum’s environment, this challenging for viewers to question the form of a photo book.
Newsome worked alongside Sara Ickow and David Campany to dissect and curate a plethora of books to present what is a non-canonical view of the genre of photo books created over the past 25 years of U.S. history.
