ICP x ROAR: A Master Class in Building a Multi-decade Photography Legacy

Every creative field has its own mythology about longevity and decline: the idea that relevance has a shelf life, and that a career, however celebrated, will eventually wind down. This salon discussion featuring Timothy Greenfield-Sanders proves the opposite. Greenfield-Sanders is a working photographer whose practice has spanned decades of shifting cultural ground. In this conversation, Greenfield-Sanders gets specific about method: how to keep finding the next subject, the next collaborator, the next reason the work still matters, decade after decade.

Part master class and part case study, the evening is for anyone building a long creative career and wondering what actually sustains it.  Reinvention, not retirement, is what a multi-decade legacy looks like. 

About the Speakers

Timothy Greenfield-Sanders is a portrait photographer and documentary filmmaker. Over the course of his four-decade career, he has photographed five U.S. presidents alongside generations of writers, artists, actors, and musicians. His work is in numerous museum collections including The Museum of Modern Art, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Greenfield-Sanders has directed and produced 13 documentary films. His long-running series, for HBO, on identity includes The Black List, The Latino List, The Out List, The Trans List, The Women’s List, and most recently, The A List. For all of his film projects, he also photographs the interviewees. He won a Grammy Award for ‘Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart’ and two NAACP Image Awards, for The Black List and ‘Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am’

Steven Kasher is a New York-based gallerist, curator, writer, and former artist specializing in photography and visual culture. He is the founder of Steven Kasher Gallery, established in 1995, where he has organized more than a hundred exhibitions.  He has curated over thirty exhibitions focused on Civil Rights Movement photography, bringing renewed attention to the visual history of the era.

Kasher is the author of several books, including The Civil Rights Movement: A Photographic History, 1954-68 (1996), and Memoir of a Collection: Finding Meaning Through Art (2026).

About the Series

ICP x ROAR, a new four-part salon series presented in partnership with ROAR Forward, the Hearst-backed business intelligence and community platform founded by author, photographer, and longevity expert Michael Clinton.

Tickets are available to the general public at $85 per session and $65 for ICP Members.  The four-session package is $289 for the general public and $240 for ICP Members.  The event is free for the ROAR community and ICP Trustees.
