Lang zal ze leven = happy birthday to you

"Lang Zal Ze Leven" ("Happy Birthday To You" in Dutch) is the result of Anouk Kruithof's three-month residency at a psychiatric institution. Instead of doing a standard documentary, Kruithof held a birthday party for ten patients, commemorating each event through photographs and words. She divides her book into ten parts, corresponding to each patient. A photograph of the patient is shown on the left-hand page. The patient's name, birthday, and age are printed on the right-hand page. A colored piece of paper is pasted on the page's center. When the paper is lifted, a photograph of the birthday cake that Kruithof prepared for the celebrant is revealed. Then: "Photographs from the party are presented in a subtle three-dimensional collage.
