The Firemen and the Flag
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Lori Grinker, a professional photographer with the internationally renown agency, Contact Press Images, left her apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. On her way to the subway, she glimpsed the Trade Centers on fire rising over the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. She began photographing. She quickly found her way to the Williamsburg Bridge, and walked all the way to the site of the attack at the World Trade Center where she spent several hours photographing the devastation. At approximately 3:30 pm she was standing in front of the bombed out windows on the second floor of Two World Financial Center when the three firefighters walked into her view and proceeded to raise the American flag over the smoldering ruins.
