The work of German artist Annegret Soltau was essential to performance art in the 1970s and 1980s. In Selbst (Self), she stitches thread in geometrical forms across photographic self-portraits, in a reclamation of women’s handiwork. This work developed from an earlier series of performances in which Soltau wrapped herself in dark thread, as if in a cocoon. In doing so she reflected on how human beings are subject to a continuous metamorphosis throughout life. Unlike most of the other self-portraits in the Selbst series, in this image Soltau coolly and directly meets the viewer’s gaze.
