George Palmer Putnam, who published Charles Lindbergh's We after the aviator's historic 1927 Atlantic crossing, arranged exclusive rights for Amelia Earhart's story to appear in the New York Times. Weeks before the flight, the Times began running images of Earhart alongside the Friendship's pilot Wilmer Stultz and mechanic Lou Gordon in its weekly rotogravure picture section.
