Men and women appealing government rescindment of their political prisoner status refused to wear felon's uniforms and participate in prison work. The "dirty protest" followed, as battles between wardens and prisoners grew more fierce, and soon prisoners were not allowed out of their cells to bathe and buckets of excrement were allowed to overflow into their cell. The escalating protest ended with the 1981 hunger strike. Gilles Peress
