The first National Air Races in 1929 featured the Women's Air Derby, disparagingly nicknamed "Powder Puff Air Derby." In 1935, the Earhart Prize, for which she donated the $1,250 purse, was won by Melba Beard, a twenty-two-year-old flyer who beat seven other pilots on the twenty-five-mile course.
