Designed to resemble playbills, these cartes de visite by San Francisco photographers Oscar Foss and Alfred Judson Perkins Sr. present the flight and capture of Davis as a play in three acts. Madame Vanderpants was a female character played by a male actor in J. Stirling Coyne’s 1852 one-act farce Wanted, One Thousand Spirited
Young Milliners, for the Gold Diggins.
