The Good Shepherd Community Center (later Parkway Community House) offered a range of social, cultural, and recreational activities. Its director, noted sociologist Horace R. Cayton, worked with Wright, Lee, and Rosskam during their 1941 visit and co-authored, with St. Clair Drake, Black Metropolis: A Study of Negro Life in a Northern City.
