At 2 a.m. Jim and Karen argued about Jim's upcoming business trip. Karen cried about his past infidelities. Jim tried to reassure her that he had changed, that he loved her and had no intention of being unfaithful. Karen rejected his assurances. Finally Jim tried to embrace her, but Karen folded herself into a stiff fetal position. She warned him, "You've been taught that you can't force me to do anything. Not even to be affectionate." Jim let go and turned the light off.
