Edwin Rosskam

Crowd outside of a fashionable Negro church after Easter Sunday service

Date April 1941
Location Chicago Illinois United States

Paper: 11 x 14 in. (27.9 x 35.6 cm)
Print medium Photo-Gelatin silver

Many of Rosskam's Easter Sunday images were caught by a small camera with sensitive film and a sharp lens. They show their un-posed subjects in crowded or fragmented compositions, revealing the spontaneity newly possible with the "miniature" camera and soon to flower in the post-war genre of urban street photography.
