An elder of the village, Vysni Apsa

Historical Location Carpathian Ruthenia Czechoslovakia
Dimensions Image (Paper): 7 5/8 x 9 1/2 in. (19.3 x 24.1 cm)

It was 1938, but warmth and light were provided in the dwellings of the village of Upper Apsa by burning branches and logs. I remember so well the firelight illuminating the hands and face of this village elder, whose advice was sought by members of his community. How wise and comforting a man he seemed to be.
