Digital artist and programmer Josh Begley discusses his artistic practice, which maps systems of surveillance and incarceration vis-a-vis data visualizations, digital archives, and real-time applications. His projects include a data compilation of every reported United States drone strike (Dronestream), a visual glossary of the Drone Papers, an initiative mapping the visual geography of American incarceration (Prison Map), and a quantification of military footprints (Empire.Is).

Bio

Josh Begley (b. 1984) is a data artist and app developer based in Brooklyn, New York. He is the creator of Metadata+, an iPhone app that tracks United States drone strikes.

Begley is the director of two short films, Concussion Protocol (2018) and Best of Luck with the Wall (2016), both produced by Academy Award–winning director Laura Poitras. His films have screened at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Met Breuer, the New York Film Festival, and the Museum of Modern Art.

Begley’s work has appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times, The Atlantic, New York Magazine, and at the New Museum of Contemporary Art. He is represented by Robert Koch Gallery in San Francisco.
