Martha Naranjo Sandoval, Small Death

Small Death, (MACK, 2025) collects photographs made by Martha Naranjo Sandoval in her first decade living in Brooklyn, after emigrating from Mexico City. It unfolds in a tactile and iterative way, with Sandoval arriving at a final form after making many small physical booklets and sequences, often based on her contact sheets. We see her husband, siblings and parents in their homes and in spaces between the US and Mexico – a complex experience of displacement and rootedness. Self-portraits throughout the sequences add continuity through their physical and sensual expression.
