Karla Hiraldo Voleau
Karla Hiraldo Voleau, born 1992, is a French-Dominican artist. She graduated from ECAL University of Arts and Design (Switzerland) in 2018, with her project Hola Mi Amol – it was published in 2019 as her first photo book and was a laureate of the VFG Swiss Young Talents for Photography, as well as shortlisted at Paris Photo for the Aperture First Book Awards 2019. Hiraldo Voleau was a Foam Talent in 2020, and a laureate of the Olympus Recommended Fellowship 2020.
Most recently, she exhibited her performative project ‘A Man in Public Space’, at Art Basel 2022 where she was a Swiss Design Award finalist, but also at the Biennale de l’Image Possible of Liège 2020, at Photo London 2021, among other venues. She premiered her first solo show ‘Another Love Story’ at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2022, later at the Photoforum Pasquart of Biel in Switzerland, the Foto Forum of Bolzano Italy, and the International Center for Photography in New-York City, all in 2023. She is currently a resident of the Cité Internationale des Arts of Paris.
She combines performance and photography, using images and text to create personal and narrative works. Often, she becomes the main character in her series, aiming to explore the boundaries of human interactions, love, sexuality, and friendship. Her goal is to discover the intersection and point of tension between 'real life' and art.
Initially, she delved into stereotypes surrounding Dominican and Latino men. In her recent works, she focused on exploring gender and its visual representations, incorporating more performance art, evident in projects like 'A Man in Public Space' (2020) and her latest endeavor, 'Another Love Story' (2022), which was inspired by a real-life love experience. All of these portraits and visual experiments contribute to her broader exploration of the female gaze
