Willis Hartshorn, Ehrenkranz Director, Caryl Englander, Chair, Jeffrey Rosen, President, the Board of Trustees and the staff of the International Center of Photography are deeply saddened by the passing of photojournalist Eve Arnold. We extend our condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
Arnold began working as a photographer in the 1940s for LIFE magazine, her subjects ranging from working class citizens to politicians and celebrities. Some of her most iconic images include portraits of Marilyn Monroe collected in the book Marilyn Monroe: An Appreciation. Her images of Malcolm X and Joan Crawford are included in the recently published Magnum Contact Sheets (Thames & Hudson), edited by ICP Associate Curator Kristen Lubben.
She was the first American woman admitted to the Magnum photo agency in the 1950s and was exhibited at ICP several times in the 1980s and 1990s, including a major survey of her work, Eve Arnold: In Retrospect. She also lectured at ICP several times.
In 1995, she was honored at ICP’s Infinity Awards as a Master Photographer.
