Barbara Torres
Barbara Torres is a New York City based photographer with more than 22 years of experience photographing people, weddings, and events throughout the city. A born and raised native New Yorker, she grew up surrounded by the artists and creative energy of Lower Manhattan, experiences that continue to shape the way she observes people and the world around her.
Throughout her career, Torres has photographed hundreds of weddings, often shooting up to 50 weddings a year, alongside luxury portraits, private celebrations, and charity events at New York City's most iconic venues, including The Plaza Hotel, Cipriani, and the Rainbow Room. This sustained experience has given her an intuitive understanding of how to work quickly, read light and situations, and create strong photographs in environments that are constantly changing. Her work is shaped by close observation, an instinct for human connection, and a sensitivity to the unexpected moments that give an image its life.
Known for bringing a sense of calm to the people she photographs, Torres is particularly interested in the relationship between photographer and subject and in creating an environment in which people can feel comfortable and relax in front of the camera. She is equally skilled at directing and posing, using subtle adjustments in angle, posture, and movement to create portraits that feel natural, flattering, and true to the people in front of her lens.
Her teaching draws on decades of real world professional experience and explores not only the technical craft of photography, but also composition, light, intuition, directing subjects, handling personalities and learning to recognize meaningful moments as they unfold.
