Graham Shipyards Strike; A.F.L. Shipyard workers going through C.I.O. Pickets

Defiant - An unidentified man at the left raises a clenched fist at the officer who is pushing him toward the side-walk. Only those who physically resisted police orders to disperse were placed under arrest.

Scuffle -- Scenes such as the above were frequent in yesterday's "Battle of Grant Avenue," as police stemmed a mob of striking telephone workers. Here a policeman pushes a man away from the center of the milling mob.

Picket Violence - CIO Pickets at the Union Switch and Signal Company's Swissvale plant near Pittsburgh, Pa., attempt to turn over an auto containing the plant manager and a vice president who tried to crash picket lines.

Employer Pickets - Proprietors and managers of other grocery stores picket a San Rafael grocery, one of five stores refusing to join in a shutdown called by the Marin Retail Grocers Association in its fight with the Clerks Union.

Thumbs Down - Acting on instructions from their CIO bosses, these longshoremen hold their noses and turn thumbs down at a sign outside the Army transport hiring office at Fort Mason. Later, pickets were formed to urge longshoremen not to accept work.

Ready for Trouble - CIO refinery pickets and strike sympathizers were all set yesterday outside the Standard Oil plant in Richmond for a renewal of Tuesday's battle with police. But no violence occurred, due to a CIO-AFL truce.
