Desert Cantos is one of the most important photographic projects of the late twentieth century and a landmark publication in the development of environmental photography. Created by American photographer Richard Misrach and published by the University of New Mexico Press in 1987, the book presents a complex visual exploration of the American desert as both a natural landscape and a site of human intervention. Through large-scale color photographs, Misrach examines themes of environmental destruction, military activity, nuclear testing, pollution, and the fragile relationship between humanity and the natural world.
