1991 Infinity Award: Art — Duane Michals

Duane Michals is our 1991 honoree for Art

Duane Michals is an American photographer whose innovative use of sequential imagery, handwritten text, and conceptual storytelling transformed contemporary photography during the second half of the twentieth century. Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of conceptual photography, Michals challenged the traditional documentary function of the photographic image by exploring memory, identity, dreams, love, death, spirituality, and the nature of human existence. His work expanded the expressive possibilities of photography beyond the recording of reality, demonstrating that photographs could communicate philosophical ideas, fictional narratives, and psychological experiences. Through his experimental approach, Michals became one of the most influential photographers in modern photographic art.
