Join us for a conversation with photographer Melody Melamed and poet, translator, critic, and activist Michael M. Weinstein. Bringing their extensive knowledge as cultural producers across a variety of fields, they will discuss Melamed's "Work in Progress" series and the cultural and historical contexts for queer imagemaking and visual culture.

Bios

Born and raised in Santa Monica, CA, Melody Melamed received her BFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2008, with a concentration in Design Media Arts, followed by her MFA in Photography, Video, and Related Media in 2013, at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. As a photographer, Melamed has dedicated her time exploring the perception of gender identity, specifically, the female form and what the body cannot tell about the expression of gender and gender identity.

Michael M. Weinstein is a PhD candidate in the English Department at Harvard. His scholarly interests include poetics, aesthetics, modernist studies, world literature, and translation theory. Since 2008, he has spent extended periods of time living and working in Russia, with grants from Fulbright/Institute for International Education, The Dexter Fund at Harvard University, and the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies. He is a frequent contributor to the New Yorker, where he writes primarily about representations of gender, sexuality, and disability—including an article on “Work in Progress” and Melamed’s work in contemporary America. He also is an assistant editor for the Los Angeles Review of Books.
