The drone workshop will feature a short introduction to the history of aerial image making. E. Adam Attia a.k.a. ESSAM (@E_AdamAttia) will speak about the mechanics of existing and emerging aerial photography platforms, what cameras and weights he recommends to use, the legal and regulatory context and ramifications of flying drones in New York, and best and (worst) practices. After the theoretical introduction, Frank Cost and Parker Gyokeres will showcase what can be done with various different drones models as experienced drone operators. Participants will then have the opportunity to lay their hands on a drone exercise model themselves and test their skills.

The workshop will take place at the Knockdown Center in Queens. This venue features stunning indoor and outdoor spaces and is located at 52-19 Flushing Ave, Maspeth, NY.

Participation in this workshop is limited to 20 people. Participants must sign a release form, which they will receive by email after registering.

Instructor

E. Adam Attia a.k.a. ESSAM (@E_AdamAttia) joined the US Army in 2003, where he served three years as a geospatial analyst. Upon discharge from service in 2006, ESSAM enrolled in the School of Visual Arts (SVA) where he earned a BFA in Photography. It was the military that informed his work as an artist, and he now continually seeks to create conversations on both social and political issues of our time. Over the years his work became more experimental until in early 2012, he began working in the streets of New York. Over a nine-month period, working stealthily by night, he created his most notable work. ESSAM's "Drone Campaign" garnered international press and is responsible for raising awareness and bringing the dialogue on American UAV use to its current level. His work has been featured in The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, and Fox News. Since his graduation he has actively been involved in the education of others, spreading his knowledge and ideas as a professor at SVA through a course titled "Ball of Confusion: Affecting Social Change Through Photography." With a family history that dates back to the American Revolution coupled with his personal service to the nation, ESSAM's revolutionary spirit continues to push the boundaries of art and public discourse in service to America.

"In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, brave, hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a Patriot." -Mark Twain
