Over 200,000 African Americans from the South arrived in Chicago between 1900 and 1930. Forty thousand more came during the Depression years, despite the scarcity of jobs, until the United States' defense buildup prior to World War II initiated yet another wave of migration, bringing the South Side's population to 370,000 by 1944.
