From the exhibition The Last Look: The Funerary Photographs of Curtis Humphrey, organized by the Texas African American Photography Archive, Dallas, Texas, October 25, 1997-January 31, 1998.
“The Last Look” is an African American term for photographs of deceased loved ones, usually in an open casket in a church or funeral home. For more than 60 years, photographer Curtis Humphrey (1907-1996) provided “last looks” for the African American communities of East Texas.
