Matthew Septimus
From the moment he first picked up a camera, Matthew Septimus began his profound and diligent photographic search for meaning by capturing the lives of the many dynamic people on the New York City streets he loves. His photos open a window into the incredibly diverse subjects and exciting situations that have appeared in front of his lens. Matthew continues his joyous process of capturing momentary insights and emotional connections with his ever expanding portraits of life.
Matthew is committed to using photography as a tool for outreach. His students come from a diverse list of communities, at risk youth in the South Bronx to migrant workers on Long Island. He has taught autistic adults in Brooklyn and elderly Jews on the Lower East Side. He believes photography is the perfect medium to bring people together. And it has been incredibly effective opening up doors to self-awareness.
He lives in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, with his wife, two children, dog, cat and the various birds he feeds in his backyard.
