José Antonio Rosas Rosas
José Antonio Rosas is a documentary photographer based in Lima, Peru, whose work over more than two decades has taken him across six continents. He is drawn to moments of connection, intimacy, and release — whether among people or in the animal world.
Over the years, he has built his work through repeated visits and sustained attention — returning to mass celebrations, religious pilgrimages, remote wildlife, and communities far from home, often over the course of many years. He photographs from inside the experience, seeking closeness with his subjects in moments of genuine intensity and emotion.
Rosas studied at the International Center of Photography in New York — first in the Low-Residency Program in 2015–2016, then in the One-Year Certificate Program in Creative Practices in 2018–2019. During his time at ICP's Creative Practices program, he developed a body of work on the punk scene in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan, resulting in his first monograph and solo exhibition, The Chaos Comes Alive (Contexto Editores, 2020). His second monograph, Somewhere We Feel Free, brings together a decade of work on collective celebration. It is forthcoming from Kehrer Verlag in 2026, with an essay by Jean Dykstra and an interview with Janelle Lynch.
