New Histories of Photography 8

The Mysterious Monsieur Bellocq

The exhibition highlighted the discovery of new photographs and information about the life and work of this elusive master known for his portraits from the early twentieth century demimonde of New Orleans. It is the eighth in the series "New Histories of Photography." Six of the fourteen prints were recently acquired rare early prints made prior to Lee Freidlander's acquisition of the negatives in the 1960s, possibly printed during Bellocq's lifetime. Eight prints were made by Friedlander from the original negatives. Curated by Brian Wallis.
