ICP Faculty Benjamin Sklar Launches New Book Tender Brother Limbo

ICP faculty member Benjamin Sklar will celebrate the launch of his new book and exhibition, Tender Brother Limbo, on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at THE WHITE LOFT in New York. The launch takes place at the end of day 2 during ICP's Photobook Fest, May 8–10. The evening runs from 6:00–9:00 PM, and will feature silver gelatin, risograph, and xerox prints on view, the debut of Trophy Press, a new imprint, and drinks will be served. The exhibition is curated by Roxanne Doucet.

Tender Brother Limbo offers a close portrait of American masculinity and male relationships—largely made during bachelor parties—a rite of passage celebrating a man’s journey to marriage. Shot over a 14-year period beginning in 2005 on 35mm black-and-white film, often with disposable or point-and-shoot cameras, the work captures intimacy, sensuality, and the complexity of male bonds within the lyrical documentary tradition. The book asks the question:

"What do traditional male narratives mean today, and what does it mean to be a good man?"

The 128-page hardcover contains 61 photographs and 7 essays, risograph printed and assembled by hand, in a first edition of 300.

NYC-based photographer Sklar’s work explores the complexity of life with a sense of wonderment and discovery. His works are held in the collections of the Harry Ransom Center for American History, the Ogden Museum, the Fotohof Museum, and the Newseum. He has been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists, Photo District News, and the Nieman Foundation, and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi.

In addition to his book launch, Sklar is currently teaching Portfolio Critique at ICP, a focused group workshop running Fridays from April 3 to May 1. Working across documentary, editorial, and personal narrative, Sklar brings a deeply considered approach to making and editing work, supporting each student with an individualized process. Students are invited to bring a body of work in progress and shape it into a cohesive portfolio or photobook alongside a community of fellow imagemakers.
