Naima Green

Instead, I spin fantasies

Naima Green (b. 1990, New York) is is an artist, photographer, and educator who graduated with an MFA from the ICP-Bard program. Her work blends documentary techniques with more experimental approaches to photography.

For this exhibition, Green is making a new series of staged self-portraits performing various pregnant characters in a wide range of settings, blurring the line between fact and fiction. From stereotypical suburban mom with toys littering the yard, to a sexualized and provocative character smoking while pregnant, and to the most banal of daily activities like taking out the trash, Green’s new project not only allows her to experience, play with, and provoke societal notions about pregnancy and motherhood, but also to ask her audience to do the same.

To make this work, Green is utilizing ICP School’s facilities, taking experimental process classes which are expanding her knowledge of cyanotype and lumens printing, as well as printing with a master printer who is teaching her the historical process of palladium printing.

This exhibition is curated by Elisabeth Sherman
