Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Grant Makes New Position and Creation of Center for Visual Culture Possible

The International Center of Photography (ICP), the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture, today announced the appointment of Paul Rogers to head up the institution’s newly created Center for Visual Culture as Director of Content and Public Programming. Effective immediately, he will lead the development and consolidation of all public programs between departments—in the School, Museum, and Collections—by elevating ICP’s public programming and furthering the institution’s goal of providing thought leadership in the fields of photography and visual culture. The Center and position are both funded by a generous grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Mr. Rogers joins ICP from the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, where he was the Vice President of Public Programs and Exhibitions. While there, he redesigned public programs, including organizing a lecture series with local MA and PhD students on contemporary social and cultural issues relevant to metropolitan Detroit. As well, he developed an “artifacts in the classroom” program for Detroit schools and initiated partnerships with the Arab American Museum, Holocaust Museum, Detroit Historical Society, and the Detroit Institute of Arts. His experience includes 9 years of consulting experience in thought-leadership, curriculum development and culture-based program design for clients including Tides Foundation, Kellogg Foundation, The Amistad Center for Art and Culture, and the Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator. Mr. Rogers holds a PhD in Art History from Yale University, and has lectured and taught at UC Berkley, University of Chicago, Harvard, and Emory University.

"Public programing that fosters engagement and discourse is essential to the mission of ICP, and Paul Rogers’ appointment will significantly enhance our capacity at this exciting junction in our history,” says Mark Lubell, executive director of ICP. “This pivotal hire will expand the dialogue about photography and visual culture as we launch of our new ICP Museum next month—and would not be possible without the support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.”
