Leica Camera and the International Center of Photography (ICP) Announce Asherde Gill as the Inaugural Recipient of the Leica Scholarship at ICP

TEANECK, NEW JERSEY, (November 7, 2024) — Leica Camera and the International Center of Photography (ICP) are delighted to announce that Asherde Gill has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the prestigious Leica Scholarship at ICP. This scholarship provides essential tuition support for ICP’s One-Year Certificate Program, highlighting Leica’s commitment to education and the cultivation of emerging talent in the field of visual arts.
“I am beyond excited to be spending my year at ICP sharpening my skills and connecting with fellow photographers,” said Asherde Gill. “In my imagemaking, I aim to illuminate the resilience, beauty, and struggles of Black Queer individuals in my family and beyond, while also envisioning and advocating for futures where they are fully represented and celebrated. I am grateful that this scholarship and my time at ICP will allow me to realize my vision and focus on creating and refining a complete body of work.”

The One-Year Certificate Program at ICP offers an immersive and comprehensive education in photography, combining rigorous technical training with critical theoretical studies. Through this program, Asherde Gill will have the opportunity to refine their skills, explore innovative creative directions, and engage with a vibrant community of like-minded individuals.

Asherde Gill (b. 1998) is a visual artist from Brooklyn, New York, with roots in Trinidad. Through their collaboration with light, time, sculpture, and composition, Gill explores Black queer history in Trinidad and the U.S., delving into the profound generational impacts of colonization and migration in the diaspora. Asherde is a 2023 Artist2Artist Fellow at the Art Matters Foundation and participated in the En Foco Inc. emerging artists exhibition. They were also a co-writer for the 2024 off-Broadway production of Enemies at Epic Theatre Ensemble. In addition to their artistic practice, Gill works as an educator and grant writer for Epic Theatre Ensemble. They thrive in spaces that center community care, social change, and the artistic development of NYC youth.
