Celebrating a Week of Photography Events
Including The Photography Show presented by AIPAD and
The Rules are Broken, a Weeklong Online Programming Series
NEW YORK—The International Center of Photography (ICP) will present the ICP Photobook Fest on May 21-22, 2022 at ICP’s new building on the Lower East Side located at 79 Essex Street, New York. In partnership with The Photography Show presented by AIPAD, the event will feature more than 40 leading and independent photobook publishers and photographers showcasing their latest image-based books, as well as in-person book signings and a zine-making workshop. Also featured will be photobooks by ICP School alumni and faculty. This gathering of the photobook publishing community will celebrate and examine the lasting power of the photobook in ICP’s new state-of-the-art museum and school.
The ICP Photobook Fest is part of a week of photography events including The Photography Show presented by AIPAD (May 20-22, with a VIP Preview May 19, at Center415 on Fifth Avenue at 37th Street), and the second iteration of ICP’s The Rules are Broken, an annual weeklong programming series dedicated to exploring critical issues and their impact on photography and image making. The Rules are Broken: Memory and Materiality in Photography will be held online May 16–19, in advance of the ICP Photobook Fest, and focuses on the dynamic field of photobook making and photography’s powerful and material role in defining history. The week celebrates ICP’s community of image makers creating social and political change through photography and includes an ICP Talks lecture from alumni Nona Faustine, a conversation moderated by NYTimes Photo Editor James Estrin with Natalie Keyssar and Oksana Parafeniuk on covering the conflict in Ukraine, and Alec Soth, Sim Chi Yin, and Teun van der Heijden on their recent photobooks.
“Photobooks are central to the history of photography and their unique ability speak about pressing issues of our time through carefully edited sequences of photographs from page to page is more important now than ever,” said David E. Little, executive director of ICP. “We are thrilled to partner with the Association of International Photography Art Dealers to be part of this exciting weekend honoring photography with a wide selection of prestigious photography book publishers as well as the next generation of emerging independent publishers.”

About the International Center of Photography
The International Center of Photography (ICP) is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Cornell Capa founded ICP in 1974 to champion “concerned photography”—socially and politically minded images that can educate and change the world. Through exhibitions, education programs, community outreach, and public programs, ICP offers an open forum for dialogue about the power of the image. Since its inception, ICP has presented more than 700 exhibitions, provided thousands of classes, and hosted a wide variety of public programs. ICP launched its new integrated center on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in January 2020. Located at 79 Essex Street, ICP is the cultural anchor of Essex Crossing, one of the most highly anticipated and expansive mixed-use developments in New York City. ICP pays respect to the original stewards of this land, the Lenape people, and other indigenous communities. Visit icp.org to learn more about the museum and its programs.
