The International Center of Photography (ICP) is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Through our exhibitions, education, public programs, and community outreach, we offer an open forum for dialogue about the power of the image. Since our founding in 1974, we have presented more than 700 exhibitions and offered thousands of classes, providing instruction at every level. Our new integrated center on the Lower East Side reunites our school and museum in one space to become the cultural anchor of Essex Crossing.

Position Summary:

The International Center of Photography, a leader in photography and lens-based media education, is seeking adjunct faculty to teach across ICP Youth Programs. These programs take place at various locations throughout the five boroughs of New York City. ICP seeks to introduce our photography and media students to a broad range of professional perspectives including those of practicing photographers and artists, curators, theorists, writers, and cultural catalysts. Resources available to teachers and classes include the museum’s active exhibition and programming as well as the school’s state-of-the-art analog and digital facilities, our collection and archive of 200,000 images, and library of 20,000 photobooks.  

Essential Functions and Duties:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Based on availability, expertise, and program schedules, Youth Programs faculty teach a variety of photography and related programs including but not limited to:
  • Seasonal courses during the fall, winter, and/or spring trimesters for preteens, teens, and adults, meeting once weekly for varying lengths of time. Programs primarily take place at ICP in the Lower East Side or at partner sites, including THE POINT in Hunts Point
  • Seasonal summer intensive courses that typically meet for one week, Monday-Friday, from 10AM-4PM.  
  • K-12 public school arts residencies for preteens and teens meeting for varying durations based on program scope, budget, and school schedule. School-based residencies typically take place during the school day and meet one to two times weekly.  
  • Half-day professional development workshops with K-12 public school teachers.  
  • Weekend intensive programming for young people.  
  • Complete end of class evaluations.
  • Submit a syllabus or detailed course outline two or more weeks in advance of program start dates.  
  • Work collaboratively with the volunteer Teaching Assistants (TAs) and/or employee Youth Program Liaisons (YPLs) supporting instruction for young people.  
  • Meet with youth programs administrative staff before each program starts to review logistics and course materials (syllabus, etc.)
  • Provide an open, accepting, and collaborative environment for youth to learn photography and related media.
  • Participate in meetings with partner staff (e.g. school staff, staff at The POINT, etc.) when applicable to assigned programming.
  • Adhere to ICP policies related to youth safety, mandatory reporting, and professional conduct. 

Requirements

  • 2-3 years of experience working with preteens and/or teens in a classroom, workshop, school, museum, or comp setting, either as a lead instructor or assistant
  • 2-3 years of prior experience studying photography in a formal or informal setting 

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include past experience for one or more years doing the following: 

  • Teaching K-12 school-based programs
  • Teaching black-and-white analog photography including film developing and printing in the darkroom
  • Teaching digital photography  
  • Working with ICP Youth or Community Programs in a volunteer or staff capacity
  • Participating as a student of ICP Teen Academy or ICP at THE POINT  

Experience Qualifications: 

  • 3-5 years in arts administration, teaching youth, and community engagement
  • Experience in teaching groups, leading tours, and public speaking
  • Experience implementing photography related curricula and lesson plans
  • Prior managerial and/or supervisory experience is required 

 

Notes

  • Background checks are required, as applicable, for all ICP staff and volunteers working with young people at all worksite locations.

Compensation

$100/course hour

$61/hour as assigned for work such as required meetings, exhibition preparation, that fall outside of contracted course hours  

This is a part-time, non-benefits eligible position.
