ICP alumna Evelyn Sosa (Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism '23) has launched her photobook No Place Is Far Away (Ningún lugar está lejos), published by Rialta Ediciones in January 2026. The project began as her long-term documentary work during her time at ICP, evolving over three years into the fully realized book it is today.
The book documents objects that Cuban exiles carried with them when leaving Cuba, offering through their collective portrait a map of displacement, memory, and longing. Moving between the intimate and the public, loss and remembrance, the work explores how each person experiences exile differently, for some a terminal condition, for others a form of freedom.
No Place Is Far Away features a prologue by María Antonia Cabrera Arús and an interview with Evelyn by Legna Rodríguez Iglesias, and is part of the FluXus series coordinated by Carlos A. Aguilera.

Evelyn also opened her solo exhibition No Place Is Far Away, on view through December 20 at the Nautilus Sonesta Miami Beach Hotel, as part of No Vacancy Miami Beach 2025, a juried art competition that celebrates artists, provokes critical discourse, and invites the public to experience Miami Beach’s famed hotels as destination art spaces.
The project s a living archive of migration. It begins with a seemingly simple question: What object did you take with you when you emigrated? This question opens a door into intimate territory, revealing stories of love, loss, attachment, and letting go. Small or even minimal objects become emotional anchors, fragments of a home that resists being forgotten. A piece of clothing, a photograph, a letter, a seed. Each one carries a story that goes beyond its physical form. The series explores displacement not only from a geopolitical perspective but also through a sensory and emotional lens. Each photographed object serves as silent testimony. What we leave behind does not disappear. It transforms into memory, into wound, or into a form of resistance. As Paul Ricoeur wrote, memory is not a neutral archive. It is an act that reactivates each time we look again, tell a story again, or reach out and touch something again.

Sosa's interest lies not only in the object itself but in what still lingers within it. The echo of a voice, an imagined scent, an emotion that remains alive. No Place Is Far Away is deeply grounded in the Cuban migratory experience, yet it speaks to something universal. It reflects how we carry home with us and how an object can become a home, a portable root. In a world shaped by displacement, this series asks important questions.
