1996 Infinity Award: Lifetime Achievement — Cornell Capa

Cornell Capa is the recipient of the 1996 Lifetime Achievement award

Cornell Capa, born Kornél Friedmann in Budapest, Hungary, was a Hungarian-American photographer, curator, and cultural advocate whose work played a fundamental role in shaping modern photojournalism and the institutional recognition of photography. By 1996, Capa had established an international reputation not only as a documentary photographer but also as a leading promoter of what he termed "concerned photography"—photography committed to social responsibility, human rights, and public engagement.

By 1996, Cornell Capa had become one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century photography. His legacy extended far beyond his own photographic production to include his leadership in preserving photographic history, promoting documentary practice, and advancing photography as a socially engaged medium. His concept of the "concerned photographer" continues to shape discussions of ethics, documentary practice, and visual storytelling, while the International Center of Photography remains one of the field's most important cultural institutions.
