Lucas Samaras

A well-known sculptor, painter and performance artist, Lucas Samaras began working in photography after he discovered the highly malleable wet dyes of freshly made Polaroids. Though technically quite different, this piece for Macintosh computers, Photoflicks and Photofictions (A to Z) can be understood as an extension of Samaras's manipulated Polaroids. The piece consists of 4,432 iPhoto and iMovie files on a Mac Mini presented with monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, desk, and chairs. Both the still and moving images are digitally manipulated and are accompanied by sound. The particular hardware and furniture are an essential part of this installation in reference to the artist's studio work station. This piece is from the collection of the George Eastman House. Alison Nordstrom, Curator of Photography, George Eastman House.
