The images in this installation come from Alex Niragira’s photo project, The Natural Hair Project. It’s main goal is to encourage and inspire young African girls to care and proudly wear their hair in its natural form, without adding any chemicals to straighten it. The term “natural hair” only applies to girls with afro hair that hasn't been treated with any chemicals. With that campaign, Niragira wanted to highlight the fact that for black girls, wearing their natural hair is knowing and being proud of who they are as a black women.

How to View Natural Hair

During the day, Natural Hair can be viewed on monitors inside the ICP Museum and during evening hours, images are literally “projected” onto the windows of the ICP Museum; they can be viewed from the sidewalk outside the Museum and are most visible after sunset. Learn more about Projected.
