Join us for the opening of 2018 ICP-Bard MFA candidate Timothy Briner’s solo exhibition, Twenty Four Twenty, at the ICP-Bard MFA Studios in Long Island City.

Twenty Four Twenty looks at the artist’s studio as a conflicted space—one that functions as both emotional sanctuary and unintended fortress. Initially, Briner’s struggle with depression drew him into the studio and gallery space at 24-20 Jackson Avenue as an escape from the outside world. It became his canvas—its core components and architecture a place for introspection.

Briner pairs traditionally printed photographs with interventions into the space, positioning the psychological impact of its design as a framework that ultimately perpetuates his emotional struggle. In an unfortunate, endless cycle, what was once a haven and source of escape has become a trap, with the artist struggling to find a way out.

Bio

Timothy Briner (Chesterton, IN) is an American artist living in Brooklyn, NY with his wife and daughter. Briner is best known for his 2007 project, Boonville, in which he spent a year documenting six different towns across the United States, all of which were named Boonville. During the last three years, Briner has moved into the studio and his approach to making work has become centered around his immediate surroundings and is rooted in his family history and his struggles with depression. Briner has had solo shows at Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York, the Brauer Museum of Art in Indiana, and Keene State College in New Hampshire. Briner is the recipient of the Peter S. Reed Foundation grant.
