ICP alum Alexis Gines (Documentary Practice '25) was selected to participate in the 2026 cycle of Magnum Foundation's Counter Histories: Puerto Rico, supporting photographic projects that engage with archives and collective memory of Puerto Rico and its diaspora.
She is one of eight fellows selected this year. The selected fellows were chosen from 216 applications, via an open call and nomination process.
The selection committee included members of the Magnum Foundation team as well as Aldeide Delgado, founder and director of Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA); Abdiel Segarra, artist, researcher, and Curator at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico; and Susanna Temkin, Senior Curator at El Museo del Barrio. This year’s fellowship cohort is the first chapter of a three-year initiative, which will include a symposium in San Juan with the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Puerto Rico, as well as additional future grantmaking and public programming in Puerto Rico, New York City, and beyond.
Gines is working on her project titled Through The Grapevine. “My father was killed in an East Harlem drug war in the early 1990s when I was 11 months old. Using three generations of family archive as both research and visuals, I am making work acknowledging the presence of absence, which hopes to reimagine what life might have looked like if my father survived,” Gines said.
