Chia-Yun Wu (Creative Practices ’24) is launching her first solo exhibition in New York with her new project Elsewhere, at Nunu Fine Art gallery, 381 Broome Street, Manhattan, from September 10 to October 31, 2026. The opening reception takes place on September 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Elsewhere is part of Nunu Fine Art's PROJECT SPACE: ASIAN VOICES program, featuring a new series of photographic and installation works that explore Chia-Yun's sense of self and notions of homeland, family, and cultural identity as a citizen of a nation still awaiting recognition. Born in Taiwan, Chia-Yun inherited a cultural lineage defined by constant flux — shaped by centuries of colonialist rule and the ongoing lack of recognition for the island's sovereignty. Through an exploration of personal and familial history, her own experiences became intertwined with the complex legacy of her birthplace, and questions of nationhood and belonging became paramount to her life and work.

"Four years after moving to the US, I’m finally having my first New York solo exhibition. When I came here in 2022 and began again from nothing, all I had was a portfolio from another life. There were years of moving around, self-doubt, and moments of feeling lost in this city. Somehow, I’ve been lucky enough to arrive at a new point of departure, four years later."
Born in Taiwan and based in New York, Chia-Yun Wu is an artist and filmmaker holding an MA in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art in London and an MFA in Motion Picture from the National Taiwan University of Arts. A filmmaker as well as a visual artist, she leverages aesthetic strategies common in cinema to her photography and installation work, splicing and reconfiguring family snapshots with landscape photography to create coherent, affective compositions. Her work explores the human condition through film, photography, mixed media, and installation, and has been described as a direct and anguished cry against the deprivation of recognition. Recent exhibitions include the Taipei Biennial, LUMA Arles, and Art Basel Hong Kong, as well as solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and Photo London at The National Hall, Olympia, London. She is also the recipient of the 2025 Dior Photography and Visual Artists Award for Young Talents.
