For the past ten years, art critic Jorge Villacorta and researcher art Andrés Garay have been studying the photography of the Arequipa School. The present book represents the published outcome of their findings. The book, as noted by the authors is a chronology of the evolution of the photographic art in Arequipa, a phenomenon that initiated with the travelling photographers in 1860. The book starts with the production of the studio of Carlos Heldt in 1872, reaching its highest splendor during the professional competitions between Emilio Díaz and Max T. Vargas, between 1905 and 1914. During this golden period noted photographers that were disciples of Max T. Vargas, brothers Carlos and Miguel Vargas and Martín Chambi started their careers.
