Kim feared that the tension she felt after leaving her violent husband and starting over alone was dangerous for her baby. "I could grab him right now if he did something bad, and throw him up against the wall," she said at Women Against Abuse, a shelter in Philadelphia. "At moments like these I think my dad used to do that to me, now I may do it to this kid." The staff at shelters help women deal with such feelings.
